10-minute upper body strength for a toned physique
Trembling arms, straightened back, sculpted shoulders: this 10-minute circuit targets just what you need. No equipment required, a mat is enough β light dumbbells for those who want to push further.
Back-to-school is the time to get your upper body back on track. Staring at screens all day, rounded shoulders, slouched back: five well-chosen movements are enough to reverse the trend and redefine arms, back, and shoulders. We'll do it in a circuit, 40 seconds of effort, 20 seconds of rest, two rounds, ten minutes flat. Engage your core, breathe, let's go.
1. Dynamic Push-ups + Renegade Row
Push-up position, knees or feet on the floor depending on your level, hands under shoulders. Controlled descent for 2 seconds, powerful push. Dumbbell variation: a dumbbell under each hand, pull one elbow towards your hip with each ascent, alternating β your core works as much as your arms. Keep your pelvis stable, without swaying.
2. Bent-Over Row
Torso bent at 45Β°, flat back, knees slightly bent, core engaged. Pull your elbows back, squeezing your shoulder blades, release with control. Dumbbell variation: a light dumbbell in each hand for real resistance on the back and biceps. Avoid arching your lower back.
3. Dynamic Lateral Raises
Standing, feet hip-width apart, arms extended to the sides. Pulse slightly upwards without going above shoulder height, wrists stable. Dumbbell variation: a light dumbbell in each hand β your shoulders will warm up quickly, that's normal, keep your traps relaxed.
4. Triceps Dips on the Mat
Seated, hands behind your hips, fingers pointing forward, legs bent. Bend your elbows to lower your pelvis towards the floor, push back up keeping your shoulders away from your ears. Dumbbell variation: place a dumbbell on your thighs to add resistance to the movement and intensify the triceps workout.
5. Star Superman
Lying on your stomach, arms and legs extended, neck long. Lift your chest and legs at the same time, open your arms and legs into a star shape, close with control. Dumbbell variation: a light dumbbell in each hand during the movement for more resistance on the back and glutes.
Two rounds, ten minutes, an upper body that's truly worked. The secret isn't in the weight you lift but in consistency: it's better to do ten well-executed minutes three times a week than one big isolated session occasionally. Light dumbbells (1 to 3 kg is enough to start) allow you to progress without straining your joints β only increase the weight when the movement becomes easy, not before.
Listen to your body throughout the circuit β if one shoulder hurts more than the others, reduce the intensity or remove the dumbbells; always listen to your body. No promises of sculpted arms in a week here, just a short routine you can actually stick to long-term. See you next week for the next part.
